Monsoon set to withdraw the country on October 28 after prolonged stay

After missing its normal date by nearly two weeks, the monsoon is set to retreat from the country on October 28, the weather office said on Friday.

The southwest monsoon normally withdraws from the country by October 15. This year it has stayed longer, causing crop damage, which in turn has pushed up prices of onions, tomatoes, and potatoes.

"With likely setting in of northeasterly winds in the lower tropospheric levels along and off east coast of India and adjoining Bay of Bay of Bengal, including over Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu Coasts. The southwest monsoon is likely to withdraw from entire country around 28 Oct," said the India Meteorological Department.

So far, monsoon has retreated from the north and central India. It is expected to quickly make its way across the country before leaving from Kerala, which is also the initial point of onset for the crucial season.

Simultaneously, Northeast monsoon rains are also likely to commence over Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, Coastal Andhra Pradesh and adjoining areas of Karnataka and Kerala around 28 Oct, 2020," IMD added.
